USA: Gay And Lesbian Rights Step Ahead As Obama Abandons Marriage Case

Under a directive of President Barack Obama, support for a Federal
law that recognizes exclusively that marriage is a union between a man
and a woman, and threatened the right of gay and lesbian couples to
marry will no longer be supported by the White House.

Today Obama announced that the Defense of Marriage Act 1996 was
unconstitutional, ordering government lawyers to abandon a case
defending the legislation endorsed by former President Bill Clinton.

The Act clearly defines marriage as a union between a man and a
woman, and now has been deemed unconstitutional for contravening the
provisions granting equal protection under the law.

The five US states that recognize gay and lesbian marriage, Massachusetts, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut

will no longer fear federal intervention overruling their commitment to the right of all citizens to marry.

The decision came on advise from the Justice Department, but
affirms the moves within the White House to slowly remove discriminatory
practices, including the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on gay and
lesbians in the armed forces.

While the moves are positive for the gay and lesbian community
Obama has not publicly endorsed gay marriage.  He has stated previously
his acceptance of civil unions, but has said he “struggles” with the
right of gay and lesbian couples to marry.
