Mikhail Gorbachev 80th Celebrated By Stars: But Where Were Vladimir Putin or Dmitry Medvedev?
As the former and final leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev is credited with being one of the most significant political leaders of the 20th century. Yet what other politician, what other Nobel peace prize winner would cut their 80th birthday cake with celebrities, both old and new, Shirley Bassey, Kevin Stacey and the list goes on?
It was a gala night at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Just some of the leading lights of the night were actor, come politician Arnold Schwarzenegger
, Israeli President Shimon Peres and former British Prime Minister John Major.
Yet the crowds lined up to see stars as they entered the hall on the red carpet. Some were old enough to remember the day the Berlin Wall came down, others were not.
Mel C from the Spice Girls rose to fame as the Soviet Union collapsed, while others had had their day, Brian Ferry and Sharon Stone.
Some were just children as the Berlin Wall came down, like Holly Vance.
It was Gorbachev broke down the wall between the USSR and the west, with radical economic reforms and moves to introduce democracy into the nation.
Glasnost, openness began a era of communication that had been shut down by Stalin.
Gorbachev changed the face of Russia, and celebrated his birthday in London.
Prominent among those not attending where Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev.
