Iran Dismissed Kuwait’s Spy Cell Accusation as “Baseless”

Allegations that the Iranian government have set up a spy network have fueled tensions between the Governments of Kuwait and Iran.

News emerged last week that a court in Kuwait had sentenced two diplomats from Iran to death over allegations of spying.

While in Iran today a strong statement has been issued denying that any spy ring had been sponsored by that Government.

Its been diplomatic ping pong between the two Islamic states, with Kuwait recalling it’s Ambassador stationed in Tehran, then announcing that the death sentence was commuted to allow the Iranian nationals to be deported back to Iran.

Tensions began to rise between the two nations in May 2010 when officials uncovered what was believed to be an Iranian spy ring.  The Government had uncovered a surveillance network that had targeted two military bases, one controlled by Kuwait, the other by the USA.

While in detention the men accused of spying admitted to taking photos of the sensitive sights and passing information on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Its a claim that the Iranian government have denied.

In a statement released by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the allegations were referred to as:

“the unfounded and baseless charges.”
The Ministry also called the Kuwait court’s action in passing the death sentence against the Iranian nationals as an  “irresponsible move,” according to Fars News.
