Ricky Martin, Russell Simmons; Two Of The Best Win Gay Awards

Singer Ricky Martin and Hip Hop producer Russell Simmons were honored on Saturday night in New York with awards presented by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
They stood amongst industry heavy weight Oprah Winfrey who’s ‘O’ magazine was recognized for covering and raising issues of importance to the Gay and Lesbian Community.
Ricky Martin first shot to fame in his home country of Pueto Rico in 1991 but the star hid his sexuality until he came out in 2010, very publicly on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Now the father of surrogate twins Martin has been a roll model for young people around the world encouraging them to accept and be proud of their sexuality.  For this he was awarded on Saturday night the Vito Russ Award acknowledging in his work to eliminate homophobia.
Russell Simmons was honored with an Excellence in Media Award. 
The man who created the Def Jam records is seen as one of the most success business people in America and is also one of the most vocal activists for both animal rights and the rights of the gay and lesbian community, particularly as an activist for gay marriage.
Other people who were recognized were Frank Rich of the New York Times and Marvel Comics X-Factor by Peter David.
